Frequently Asked Questions
Questions, Answered
The things intended parents and surrogates ask us most. If your question is not here, just ask. We would rather tell you plainly than have you guess.
For Intended Parents
What qualifications does your team have?
Our team is made up of people who know surrogacy from the inside. Several have been surrogates themselves, and others bring deep experience across case management, the medical side, and the legal side of building families. Everyone here is intimately experienced with surrogacy.
Who are your clients?
About half of our clients are from the United States and about half are from Europe. Roughly half of our intended parents are same-sex and half are heterosexual. We work with HIV-positive families, single intended parents, parents with unique circumstances, and families who come to surrogacy for many different social and medical reasons. Whoever you are, it is a pleasure to support you in growing your family.
How many clients do you serve a year?
We serve about 30 clients a year, and that is on purpose. We know who you are when you call, we remember your details, and we are available to you.
How many cases does each case manager carry?
Intended Parent Case Managers care for about 35 families at a time. Surrogate Case Managers care for about 25 surrogates at a time.
Who will I talk to throughout the process?
Your care team includes your Intended Parent Case Manager and your surrogate’s Case Manager. Your primary contact is your Intended Parent Case Manager, who knows every detail of your case, coordinates with your other providers, and sends you updates as things progress. Someone is always available to support you.
What is the current match time?
Our current average match time is one to three months.
Do you screen surrogates before matching them with us?
Yes. Every surrogate goes through a thorough screening process, and all of it happens before we ever show you her profile. Screening includes:
- OB clearance
- Medical records collection and review
- Comprehensive background and social media checks
- Home visits
- Psychological consultation and evaluation
- Drug testing
- Perinatologist evaluation
Are your estimates what clients actually pay?
It is impossible to give a firm cost for a surrogacy, because so many people are involved. Our agency fee is straightforward, and every other expense is laid out clearly. In general you can expect the full process to cost $200,000 to $250,000. Please ask to see a sample budget, and see our Costs and Insurance page for the itemized picture.
Who holds and manages the funds?
We provide a list of reputable third-party escrow services that are independent, insured, bonded, and legal, so you can interview them and choose the one you are most comfortable with.
Can we use our own attorney, doctor, or funds holder?
Yes. We love working with new providers and welcome anyone you already have a relationship with, as long as they have experience with surrogacy. We also have a large established network of professionals we can recommend.
What kind of relationship can we expect with our surrogate?
Every relationship is unique. As we get to know you and your surrogate, we learn what kind of relationship each of you wants, and we match you based on those expectations.
For Surrogates
What if I do not qualify?
That is exactly what the short questionnaire is for. You will know quickly and privately, on your own time. Many women are surprised to learn they do qualify, and if not now, we will tell you what would need to change.
Will this take over my life?
No. The active part, from matching to delivery, typically takes twelve to fifteen months, and you live your normal life throughout. There are appointments and check-ins, but your case manager works around your schedule.
What about my own family and kids?
All of our surrogates are moms, that is actually a requirement. Your family comes first, always. Your partner is involved from the start so everyone feels comfortable, and many surrogates say their kids learn beautiful lessons about generosity along the way.
Is it strange to carry a baby for someone else?
Most surrogates say it feels completely different from carrying their own child. You go in knowing this baby has a family waiting, and the relationship you build with the intended parents is often one of the most meaningful parts.
What if something goes wrong medically?
You are covered. The intended parents carry an insurance policy for you, you choose your own OB, and a dedicated case manager watches over everything.
How much are surrogates compensated?
Base compensation typically runs from $60,000 to $100,000 depending on experience and circumstances, plus monthly support, bonuses, and reimbursements. See the For Surrogates page for the full picture.
I am interested but not ready to commit.
You are not committing to anything. The questionnaire simply tells you whether you could be a fit. After that we would have a conversation, with no pressure and no timeline. Most surrogates take weeks or months between curious and ready, and we will be here whenever that is.
Still have a question?
Ask us. We would rather answer plainly than have you wonder.
